Jean

Law; Advice on Legal Careers

Jean Meiring holds Law degrees from Stellenbosch University in South Africa and Oxford University (BCL with distinction). He is a barrister at the Johannesburg Bar.

Before returning to practice, he taught at Oxford and Cambridge. At the former, he was a College lecturer at Magdalen College, teaching Roman Law. He also taught Competition Law to final year (FHS) and masters (BCL) students. At Cambridge, he was a fellow and director of studies in Law at Murray Edwards College (formerly New Hall). There he taught Civil Law, Contract Law, the Law of Torts and English Legal History.

At Magdalen, he was involved in the interview process, and, at Cambridge, for several years, he interviewed undergraduate applicants to Clare College and Murray Edwards College. Jean has an international reputation as a tutor in advocacy and public speaking. He is a former Rhodes Scholar. Jean focuses on advising students applying to read Law at leading universities, especially Oxbridge. He is also able to provide advice to students and graduates wishing to enter the legal profession.

Although Boin is ethnically Korean, she was raised in Berlin, Germany where she finished secondary school before going on to study Economics, Political Science and German Literature at Columbia University in New York.

Upon completing her undergraduate degree in the States, she returned to Europe to pursue her second undergraduate degree in Law at the University of Cambridge. She was fortunate enough to secure a training contact with the international law firm Mayer Brown in her first year at Cambridge, and completed her Legal Practical Course (LPC) at Kaplan Law School. Upon qualification, Boin joined the Banking team at Latham & Watkins, and specialises in Structured Finance/Securitisation at the US firm. Boin specialises in advising students who are applying to study Law at university.

Niall

Niall

Physics; Maths

Niall is currently undertaking his Ph.D. in Quantum Information Processing at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. He teaches Cambridge undergraduates Part IA Physics and Part II Advanced Quantum Physics.

Before beginning postgraduate research at Cambridge, Niall studied Physical Natural Sciences at Jesus College, Cambridge, graduating with a double first in Physics, and a first in his MSc (Part III) in Physics. He has been awarded numerous academic awards at Cambridge, including the Jesus College Sir Alan Cottrell award for his performance in the Physical Sciences, and College Scholarships. Niall was awarded the MCB Alderman Carlisle Prize (Special Merit Prize) for his performance in his A-level exams; he was also placed second in the whole of Northern Ireland in A-level Further Maths.

Niall delivers Independent Thinkers workshops in preparing for Oxbridge Physics, Maths and Engineering entrance assessments.

David

David

Economics; Economics and Management; Politics; PPE; TSA and LNAT Preparation

David was educated at Eton College, where he was a King’s Scholar, and at the University of Pennsylvania from where he graduated magna cum laude and with two bachelor’s degrees: one in Economics and Management from the Wharton School, and one in PPE from the College of Arts and Sciences. At UPenn, he was Benjamin Franklin and Joseph Wharton Scholar, and served as a teaching assistant for courses in game theory, probability and rational choice theory. After graduation, David worked for two years in economic consulting in New York and London. He is recently completed his M.Phil. in Politics and Comparative Government, with a quantitative research focus, at the University of Oxford.

Alex

Alex studied Psychology with Philosophy at Oxford where he was an academic scholar and received an outstanding achievement prize for his undergraduate extended essay. Before going up to Oxford, he completed his secondary education at Highgate School in London where he was a foundation academic scholar. After graduating from Oxford, Alex came to Cambridge to undertake his Ph.D. in Psychology and Psychiatry; during his time in Cambridge, he supervised Cambridge undergraduates for the PBS Tripos. Alex has over eight years of private tutoring experience, including successfully helping students prepare applications for leading UK universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. He has developed and delivered highly successful TSA preparation courses for Independent Thinkers Courses.

Hans is currently studying for his PhD in Clinical Medicine Research at Imperial College, where he also works as a Maths tutor for the Imperial College Business School. Before Imperial, Hans achieved his Master’s in Computational Biology (with Distinction) from the University of York, and his BA in Mathematics from King’s a College, Cambridge.

Hans has over three years of private tutoring experience, from teaching GCSE and IGCSE Maths, Physics and Chemistry through to university preparation, including STEP, for Maths and Computer Science.

Petra

Biology; Chemistry; Geography; Biological Natural Sciences; Medical School Applications

Petra studied Medicine at Pembroke College, Cambridge, graduating from the medical Tripos last year. She is currently completing her second Cambridge degree in Natural Sciences, also at Pembroke. Before Cambridge, she studied the IB at Headington School, Oxford, achieving 44/45 in the IB diploma with 7s (the highest possible grade) in all her SL and HL subjects, including Chemistry, Biology and Geography.

At Pembroke, Petra has been Lower Boat Captain, and is currently cox and welfare officer for the Pembroke College Boat Club. She has also been a lead tutor on the college’s Women in Science residential programme and has extensive private tutoring experience, supporting students from GCSE upwards with Geography, Maths, Chemistry and Biology.

Katy

Katy will be entering the final year of her clinical studies in Veterinary Science at Jesus College, Cambridge this autumn, having also completed her pre-clinical studies and a degree in Biological Natural Sciences (Pathology) at Cambridge. She has extensive tutoring experience, focusing on working with students aged 14-18, and has been involved in running peer-mentoring schemes in secondary schools. Katy has been the Captain and Vice-Captain of the Cambridge University women’s 1st football team; her extensive coaching experience informs her teaching and tutoring practice.

Henry graduated from Cambridge in 2017 with a first-class master’s degree in History and Philosophy of Science, as well as a degree in Human, Social and Political Sciences. He was awarded the Johnson-Jary Prize from Fitzwilliam College for his academic performance. Henry has been tutoring English, Maths and the social sciences for over five years. He has extensive personal tutoring experience and has also taught English to groups of students at the Judge Business School in Cambridge, and on an international summer programme in Hong Kong. At Cambridge, he captained the Cambridge University Football team and was a Hawks’ Committee Member.

Debdipto (Deep) holds a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Warwick, and an MPhil in International Development from Jesus College, Cambridge, where his research was jointly funded by HEFCE and the University of Cambridge. Deep has worked as an Economist at the UK Foreign Office, and currently works at a leading international development NGO in Zurich.

He has interned in a variety of fields from think tanks to political parties. These experiences include working at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in New Delhi, and on Boris Johnson’s Mayoral Campaign. He also holds a Level 1 coaching qualification with the Football Association (FA). He has extensive experience tutoring Economics, and has taught Maths at all levels from 11+ to university entrance.

Adele-Julier

Biology; Chemistry; Oxbridge Entrance

Adele is a PhD student working on modern pollen-vegetation relationships with the Open University. She has an MSc with Distinction in the Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in Natural Sciences, specialising in Plant Science and Ecology, from Magdalene College, Cambridge. Adele has taught undergraduates and A level students undertaking field work in Indonesia and Egypt, and has also worked in Belize and Ghana, where her current research is centred. Her main areas of interest are botany, ecology, climate change, geology and physical geography. Adele has a keen interest in choral singing and was a member of Magdalene College Chapel Choir as an undergraduate and St Giles Cathedral Choir during her MSc.

Nick

Nick

Philosophy; PPE

Nick lectures on Logic and Philosophy at Oxford University. He has also taught Philosophy at Leeds University and has been a Jacobsen Fellow the Royal Institute of Philosophy. Nick holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy from Oxford, and a second Master’s degree in Linguistics from Paris Diderot University. His Ph.D. was on the metaphysics of public language; his current research focuses on the philosophy of language and linguistics.
